The most famous African American woman in America, Harriet Tubman, was the primary conductor of the famous Underground Railroad. Helping over hundreds of slaves escape their plantation homes in order to become free men and women. This took a lot of guts and nerves! A woman once a slave helping her own kind travel from south to north and trying not to get caught by hound dogs and plantation owners. If slaves were to be caught there punishments would be harsh and could cost them big time! Harriet Tubman and the Underground Railroad system would soon later become one of the most remarkable systems known to man and woman. The main goal was to help slaves escape the south to travel up north and become free. This was not an easy process for some…The Underground Railroad was not an actual railroad and it was not underground. It was a secretive name so slaves could travel in the dark and having “stopping places” in order to rest or hide from hunters who were seeking runaway slaves. The conductor helped rescue slaves and runaways from the south. Many northern African Americans (free slaves) would help rescue slaves from the southern plantation homes. Harriet Tubman was an abolitionist who wanted to risk her life to save other slaves like herself. “Harriet used the Underground Railroad, a network used by fugitive slaves to escape to free territories. They were aided by abolitionists and free African Americans who guided them to secret routes and safe houses”.
