One does not always find themselves asking the question of “Who is a role model” or “who can be defined as a leader”? I find that people often ask me this question, “Who is your leader and role model, Kermena?” and I want to answer them with an ingenious answer. One would say, “Harriet Tubman, for she laid a foundation of contribution to those in help; to those in crisis she provided the underground railroad as a means of escape.” Another would say, “Chiune Sugihara, for he risked his life and his career as a diplomat to aid Jewish refugees in fleeing the Nazi occupied nations during the Second World War.” I often contemplate on these answers that people give and the answer that I would give when asked. A volleyball is round and has no creases. If you hit it against the wall, it will bounce back up. A ball will not break, it will not rip. A leader resembles a ball. A leader of service is compassionate and strong, nothing can break him or her. They can bounce back from any situation and not let their actions be affected by anything. Their love is infallible, their wit, intangible. From my youth, I was taught to give all that I had with love because if you are going to hand anything to anyone it should be love, clemency, it should be grace. For once, I felt remarkable. It is true what Mahatma Gandhi said. It is true that the best way to find yourself is to lose yourself in the service of others. Correction, lose yourself in the love of service to others. That’s what I did. I lost myself in the love of service to others because I found that I was dismal without it. Until this day, I can not go a week without granting to those who almost have nothing, I can’t miss a Christmas without handing out my food preparations to my friends in the corner of the Journal Square Train station. I can’t miss Veteran’s day without going to see my grandfather or sending him my gift
