Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman was a massive history impact from the 1800’s, and showed the true example of how cruel slavery was. She was a civil rights activist, and risked her own life to save others from the necessary evil, slavery. She let nothing get in her way, and saved many lives and while putting her own in danger. Tubman is such an inspiration, and is looked upon by many for her risky duties. Her life at home wasn’t the best, but she grew up, changed her ways, and is a true hero. Harriet Tubman was born in 1820 in Maryland. She was born into slavery, so there are no exact records of when, and where exactly she was born (American Library). Her birth name was Araminta Ross, but was shortly after nicknamed Minky, and later on Harriet (history.com). Her life at home wasn’t the best, nor the easiest. She had work and a job 24/7. Tubman’s first job, was like a babysitter but way worse. She had to make sure that an infant baby didn’t cry and if he did, then the mistress Miss Susan would whip her on the neck (Harriet Tubman.org). Harriet would stay up all night watching the baby, making sure it didn’t make even the slightest sound. At age 12, she was hired by a man named Barrett, and she endured harsh physical work. one day, a fugitive slave was spotted and almost killed but, Tubman blocked the way and the overseer picked up a heavy metal weight from the counter and aimed it at the slave but instead hit her in the head (Harriet Tubman.org). It took four months to recover, but Harriet was never able to be sold because of her long lasting, permanent injuries (Harriet Tubman.org).
