Jason Zagame Jan 23, 2024 History. Harriet Tubman was born into slavery in Maryland, her date of birth is unknown although she was born between 1820-1825. She was thought to have been born in early 1822. Harriet was one of nine children born between 1808 and 1832. She was born to enslaved parents in Dorchester County, Maryland. Her mother, Harriet “Rit” Green, was owned by Marry Pattison Brodess, and her father was owned by another slave owner, Anthony Thompson. Thompson and Brodess eventually married. Harriet Tubman was nicknamed Minty by her parents. In Harriet’s early life, Mary Brodess’s son Edward sold three of Harriet’s sisters away. Sent to a dry goods store for supplies, she ran into a slave that had left the fields without permission. The man’s overseer demanded that Harriet help restrain the runaway. Harriet refused to help him, throwing a two-pound weight at her head. Harriet would suffer from seizures, severe headaches, and narcoleptic episodes for the rest of her life. She would also have dreams of herself in certain situations similar to her life and religious experiences. Harriet's first encounter with the Underground Railroad was an extensive system of people and passengers that helped fugitive slaves flee to the north U.S. states and into Canada. She used this system to escape herself in 1849. Following the death of her owner, Harriet decided to escape slavery in Maryland for Philadelphia. She feared that her family would be further severed and concerned for her fate as a sickly slave of low economic value. Two of her brothers, Ben and Harry, accompanied her on Sept. 17, 1849. However, after the publication of Cambridge Democrat offering a $300 reward for the return of Araminta, Harry and Ben had second thoughts about it and returned to the plantation.
