Harriet was a true heroine. Many events shaped the woman she eventually became, but in no way was her life an easy endeavor. She would go on to escape slavery and free many other slaves. Her secret identity, Moses, allowed for her daring rescues to leave a trail of mystery that infuriated the plantation owners. The rescues cost the owners thousands of dollars, as they had to pay to acquire the slaves; nevertheless, she is the reason for so many former slaves being freed.

She is devastated by the news, but John Tubman helps to progress her through the tough times. Harriet appreciates John trying to help. John finds out about Harriet’s mental disability, because she fainted into his arms. Harriet attempts to buy her freedom, because Stewart promised that she could buy her freedom for two hundred dollars. Stewart denies her request, instead she must buy her freedom for one thousand dollars. To make it up to Harriet, Stewart insists she accompany him to a picnic. At the picnic she is humiliated in front of a group of wealthy individuals; moreover, Stewart forces her to pull a cart, as if she was a horse. Harriet eventually goes on with normal life on the plantation. John and Harriet’s relationship gradually strengthens until they ultimately married each other. Harriet had been doing work for a Quaker woman to receive money, in hopes of one day buying her freedom. It is revealed that the Quaker woman is a member of The Underground Railroad. John and Harriet now frequently argued with one another. John, fed up with the arguing and worried about an ending freedom contract, walked out on Harriet.
