Harriet Tubman was an extraordinary heroine. She survived many life-turning happenings to herself, and to those she cared most about as a young child and adolescent. As she grew older, Harriet realized that there was more to life than just being a slave. Therefore, she went and sought out the freedom she deserved. In her years of being a free adult, Harriet could have been at liberty for the rest of her life, not contemplating or worrying about the fate of the southern states. Nevertheless, she faced the wrath of the Confederates by trying to succeed in freeing other slaves. They had a, contented marriage for the first moments of their life; until the time came when John would need to buy new freedom papers. Harriet at the time was also saving up for freedom papers. She had made two hundred dollars, but still her master would not give her freedom. One day all of the money disappeared, it was taken by her own husband to buy his own independence. Her liberty money was all gone. Harriet was very distraught and knew the only way she would set herself free would be if she ran away. That same year, she had also gained a new master. He made a deal with her, on the weekdays she had to work in his fields (she could take ten percent of the profits), but on the weekends she could go to town and work for money. Harriet washed clothes for a Quaker woman, the very same woman that would help her run away. During her voyage seeking liberty, she was assisted by many strangers and perused by countless enemies. Slave hunters chased after Harriet; to escape their presence, she crossed a river. Thankfully, she did not become unconscious, or she would have surely drowned. She received help from various other abolitionists, one of which was Frederick Douglass. She had finally reached Philadelphia, becoming a free woman, her was goal was met, making room for
