Harriet Tubman escaped slavery to become a leading abolitionist, and to fight back to the terrible slavery policy. She led thousands of slaves to a land of freedom and liberty. She became an icon of justice in United States as a civil right activist, earned by her legacy and justice to do what’s right.
Who Was Harriet Tubman?
Harriet Tubman was born in March 10,1820 in Dorchester County as a slave.
Her life as a slave was horrifying. She lost her rights and freedom. Her life was bruised with beating and excessive labour solely for her master’s wealth. She managed to escape from her master with her two brothers, Ben and Harry. But the journey did not turn out smoothly. Their master offered $300 reward for Ben and Harry to the slave hunters.The two brothers decided to return back home. Even though, she couldn’t leave with her brothers, Harriet finally arrived in Philadelphia, which took about 50 hours on feet. She crossed into the free state of Pennsylvania with a feeling of relief and recalled later: “When I found I had crossed that line, I looked at my hands to see if I was the same person. Since the beginning, British North America prohibited slavery by the British Parliament back in Britain. So, she decided that British North America would be the perfect destination to lead her escapees because, it was farther away from the southern states, keeping a distance from the slave hunters who get paid money to recapture the escapees. Harriet Tubman made 19 secret missions deep into the southern states to guide about 300 Black people to Canada West, British North America, today’s Ontario. She was assisted by many white people as she freed Black people. They hid her and the people she rescued in their own
