Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman, an African American slave, is best known for freeing hundreds of slaves. She was one of the most famous conductors of the Underground Railroad. During the Civil War, she worked as a cook, nurse, and spy for the Union Army. She was an active proponent of women’s suffrage and worked with women like Susan B. Anthony. Harriet Tubman was nicknamed “Minty”, from her real name, Araminta, by her parents. She was a slave. Her father, Ben Ross, also a slave, was owned by Anthony Thompson. Her mom, Harriet Green, was a slave owned by Joseph and Mary Pattison Brodess. Harriet and Ben met sometime in 1803 when Joseph died, and Mary was left in charge of Bucktown Farm. In 1861, Harriet was a volunteer for the Massachusetts troop to assist women. She cooked, washed clothes, and nursed them. In 1862, Harriet traveled to South Carolina in May. She worked with sick soldiers and fugitives nursing them back to health. She was known for being amazing at healing. She was a commander of a group of scouts in charge of espionage. She created lifelines and escape routes for slaves. On June 2, 1863, Harriet took a troop of African-American soldiers to free as many slaves as possible by catching slaveholders. This happened in South Carolina at the Combahee River. They freed more than 750 slaves. A biography was written about her and made her well-known, it was called, “Harriet Tubman”. She returned home in 1865 to Auburn, New York. Her mother and father passed away of old age. Her father died in 1871 and her mother died in 1880. Harriet was a Philanthropist and helped the needy. In 1867 she found out her old “husband” John Tubman passed away. In 1869 Harriet met a former slave and soldier named Nelson Davis. He was a brick maker. They married on March 18, 1869. In 1874 they adopted a girl named Gertie. Nelson contracted Tuberculosis and couldn’t hold a steady job. Their marriage lasted 20 years before he died in 1888. She got a veteran’s widow pension of 8 dollars a month. She supported the women’s rights movement. On June 23, 1908, a home for the elderly was opened in honor of Harriet.
