Sophia Tegel Mrs. Doerr 7th Grade ELA 19 March 2024 Harriet Tubman Araminta Ross later known as Harriet Tubman was born in March of 1822 In Dorchester County Maryland. Tubman helped over 70 enslaved people get to freedom through the underground railroads. Even though her early life was hard, she still fought for her rights and tried to help others around her. She had trouble getting freedom for the people around her and herself. Harriet Tubman was a big part of helping enslaved people get to freedom. Harriet Tubman was hard-working and brave, but her early life was hard despite her strong personality. “I had this out in my mind; there was one of two things I had the right to do, liberty or death; if I could have one, I would have the other.” (Dawson, S.). Tubman learned more about the Underground Railroad while she was in Philadelphia. Tubman missed her family dearly and left Philadelphia in 1850 to help her family escape. Tubman’s first trip was successful, then she went back for a second trip to get friends, which also was a success, but in 1851 Tubman made her third trip for her husband. Tubman found out he thought she died so he remarried a different woman and she was now pregnant, even though Tubman was very hurt she still wanted to help the couple. Tubman asked if she could help them get to freedom, but John refused. (Harrit Tubman 2024). After Tubman returned to Philadelphia, she started working in the Civil War as a spy, scout, and Nurse in 1862 (Harriet Tubman). After the War was over, Tubman took in Orphans and the Elderly, also known as her practice, “Harriet Tubman Home for Indigent Aged Negroes” (Harriet Tubman 2024).
