Harriet Tubman Harriet Tubman once said, "Every great dream begins with a dreamer. Always remember, you have within you the strength, the patience, and the passion to reach for the stars to change the world." From the years, 1860 to 1913 Harriet Tubman worked to make her dream of helping people a reality. Tubman moved to Auburn New York when she finished working on the Underground Railroad. She cared for her family and complete strangers by supplying them with food, shelter, and clothing. Tubman served as a nurse cook and spy in The Civil War and became the first women to lead soldiers into battle. Her house is now a national landmark that anyone can visit today. Many of Tubman’s belongings are exactly where she left them before her death. (Horngren) Harriet Tubman still inspires many people today to fight for what they believe in. As of the year 2000, an effort is being made in the New York government honor Harriet Tubman with a state holiday. (Browne). Tubman’s legacy lives on today in a Cincinnati museum. The National Freedom Center, which is dedicated to conductors on the underground railroad, opened in 2004 on the exact spots where fugitive slaves had their first taste of freedom. Several exhibits are remembering Tubman’s courage and leadership. Harriet Tubman’s life story is a main attraction at the museum.
