Araminta Harriet Ross was born in Dorchester Country Maryland between 1820 and 1825. We do not know her actual date of birth is unknown because she was born into slavery, so it was not recorded. Later on, she married John Tubman which changed her last name to Tubman. Her parents were Ben Ross, and Harriet Green, also known as “Rit.” Harriet eventually changed her name to Harriet from her mother, so this led to how we know her today as Harriet Tubman. A nickname she was given just as a child was Minty. Tubman growing up had a very large amount siblings, eight to be exact, Linah, Soph, Robert, Mariah Ritty, Ben, Moses, Henry, and Rachel. She had several front teeth missing, and was a short woman. She also wore a bandana on her head. She also had bounty hunters after her for a reward. Once, her reward even reached as high $40,000 which in over 1,000,000 today. Although, she was never captured. In 1844 she married a free black man named John Tubman who was 20 years younger than she was. She helped in the Union Army as a nurse, spy, and scout. As a nurse, she helped the sick in Florida and the Carolinas. She nursed blacks, whites, contrabands, and soldiers. She moved unseen through rebel territories, where she collected information. She also made several forays through rebel territories. Her Colonel was Col.James Montgomery of the second Carolina volunteers. He made many raids through by southern coastal areas. After the Civil War, Tubman went to Auburn, New York. She dedicated her life to helping poor former slaves and the elderly. To help the old she even established her own, “Home for the Aged.” To help the slaves she foraged new land for them in freedom. Furthermore, Tubman cared for her parents and needy relatives.
