Harriet Tubman: A True Hero The Civil War was based on the opposing beliefs of the North and South on slavery, but who were the heroes behind the scenes? Harriet Tubman was a well-known abolitionist who led many slaves to freedom. From conducting the Underground Railroad, to spying during the Civil War, Harriet Tubman was a selfless hero whose achievements must be remembered. She made the treacherous journey south and back not only once, but around 13 times, with her only reason being to bring others to freedom. She made these journeys solely out of the goodness of her heart, as they provided no personal benefits to her. One of Tubman's lesser known achievements was spying for the Union Army during the Civil War. During her time in southern states she would collect information for the Union Army Forces, in efforts of putting an end to slavery as a whole. Intel.gov states, “, Tubman was recruited by John Andrew, the abolitionist governor of Massachusetts, to assist union forces occupying coastal South Carolina” (Montgomery-Intel.gov). Not only did she aid the Union Army, but also took part in various slave revolts and raids. They would go against white plantation owners, often destroying their possessions and land as a form of rebellion. With all the divergent ideologies at the time, Tubman always stayed true to what she believed was right.
