“I would fight for my liberty so long as my strength lasted” (Harriet Tubman). Harriet Tubman exemplified a great amount of courage in her battle for freedom of African Americans and against slavery. Tubman was born in Dorchester County, Maryland on January 29th, 1820 as a slave of Anthony Thompson. In 1849, She liberated herself by escaping to a safe house and later the free state of Philadelphia. In Philadelphia she began her fight against slavery by getting a job, so she could pay to free slaves. She later went on to become conductor of the Underground Railroad, nursing and cooking for Union soldiers, and working as a spy with Colonel James Montgomery. During these years her courage was exhibited as she risked her life in countless instances
