A discourse community has yet to have a solid definition; though some have come close. One of the people who have attempted to define discourse community is John Swales. Swales, rather than use a standard definition, chose to create a set list of criteria. With the help of the criteria and my interview of Dane (a member of my chosen discourse community) I will discuss how my chosen group, Communications 101, is a discourse community. Communications 101 (Comm. 101) is a college credit class that helps the students in the class learn the “fundamental principles of verbal, nonverbal, written, and visual communication with an introduction to relational and organizational communication, public communication, and media studies.
Joseph Campbell defines a hero as “someone who has given his life to something bigger than himself.” In the epic poem, Beowulf, translated by Seamus Heaney and the novel Harry Potter and the Source’s Stone, by J.K. Rowling, both follow The 17 Stages of Joseph Campbell’s Monomyth. Beowulf and Harry Potter prove they are heroes and fit into Campbell’s pattern because of their bravery, perseverance and courage throughout each story. In Beowulf, the main character Beowulf, demonstrates courage throughout the poem and Campbell’s Monomyth helps prove his heroic journey.
In a present day, many people define the hero, as a person, typically a man, who is admired or idealized for courage, outstanding achievements, or noble qualities. The definition of hero can be changed depend on culture or people’s belief. Anglo-Saxon is one of tribe who has well developed warrior culture. Hermione shows heroism through braveness, intelligence, and protectionism. She sacrificed her childhood for the greater good; she erased her parents' memories of her to protect her parents during the wizarding war with Lord Voldemort.
The concept of home and what it means to each character can be seen as important plot points within both pieces of literature. Within J.K Rowling’s Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone and L.M Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables, we are able to see two characters that were initially trapped and suppressed by their settings and surroundings, who eventually come to find themselves having the ability to change their current situations. Through the settings in which these characters come to inhabit within their worlds, we are able to see a shift of perspective through the love and compassion that they receive from their new homes.
