1. Setting:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone takes place in present day England. Harry lives with his Aunt and Uncle in a perfectly normal suburban house at 4 Privet Drive. After he finds out that he is a wizard, Harry is shown a completely different world that exists parallel to his own.
This other world has magic and is populated by wizards and witches. Harry is quickly taken to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and Wizardry which is the setting for the majority of the book. There are people talking about what happened but it is unclear to the reader what is going on. The main part of the book begins with Harry’s cousin Dudley’s birthday. The boys go to the zoo where Harry magically releases a dangerous boa constrictor snake after talking with it (pg. 27-29). His Aunt and Uncle are scared and angry and we learn that these kinds of ‘events’ have a tendency to happy when Harry is upset (pg. 24-25). Soon after, he begins receiving letters which his Aunt and Uncle forbid him to open. Finally, Hagrid shows up and tells Harry that he is a wizard and takes him to Hogwarts School for Witchcraft and …show more content…
Almost instantly he becomes enemies with Draco Malfoy who is in Slytherin house. As Harry adjusts to life and school in the wizarding world he becomes increasingly concerned about dark events and rumors that Lord Voldemort has returned. After talking with Hagrid, Harry becomes convinced that the 3-headed dog in the forbidden hallway is guarding the ‘Sorcerer’s Stone’ a magical stone that grants eternal life. He believes that Professor Snape is trying to steal the stone in order to help Lord Voldemort come back to life. When nobody seems to listen to Harry, he decides that he and his two friends must find the stone themselves before Lord Voldemort gets it. Together Harry, Hermione and Ron use their bravery, intelligence and magical skills to get through the many barriers protecting the stone. Finally Harry manages to get the stone only to have Professor Quirrell show up. It turns out that it was actually Professor Quirrell who was trying to harm Harry and who was working with Lord Voldemort. When Quirrell tries to grab Harry, he is mysteriously burned up and Lord Voldemort slips away. The book ends with Harry and his friends being honored for their bravery.
