There are ten different learning styles according to Successful College Writing by Kathleen T. McWhorter. These specific styles include: independent vs. social, pragmatic vs. creative, verbal vs. spatial, rational vs. emotional, and concrete vs. abstract. In the book Harry Potter and the Sorcerer 's Stone, author J. K. Rowling exemplifies the learning qualities of an independent, rational, and pragmatic learner through her character Hermione Granger. As Hermione goes through her first year at Hogwarts, she learns more about her witchery, while staying true to her roots as this type of learner.
As defined by McWhorter, an independent learner is one who is “willing to spend time thinking about a topic and able to pull ideas together easily” (39) and Hermione clearly demonstrated this. From our very first scene with her, we learn about her independence. When she meets Harry and Ron for the first time on the train she says, “I’ve learned all our course books by heart, of course, I just hope it will be enough…” (Rowling 105-106). Hermione, as shown, takes her classes very seriously and prepares on her own to insure her knowledge of all topics. On page two hundred and nineteen, she brings Harry and Ron “an enormous old book” that she got from the library

Hermione demonstrates what it means to be independent through her love of knowledge and her self motivation to read. Her rationality protruded when she told Harry and Ron to follow the rules rather than breaking them and being selfish. Lastly, her pragmatic ways allowed Harry to find the Sorcerer’s Stone, and without her drawn out decision making, who knows where Hogwarts would
