Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Harry Potter is a scrawny 11 year old with wire rimmed glasses and messy, black hair. The Headmaster Dumbledore, an eccentric wizard capable of magic nor you or I could even fathom, and Professor McGonagall, a stiff but warm-hearted witch, leave Harry on his miserable relatives, the Dursleys, doorstep. Harry is miserable until he is brought back and told he is a wizard by Rubeus Hagrid, an oversized wizard with an even bigger heart. Harry was not able to live in this world because of *whisper Voldemort, he is the most powerful and evil wizard of all time and the ultimate enemy of Harry who defeated him when he was just a baby. “At that moment the telephone rang and Aunt Petunia went to answer it while Harry and Uncle Vernon watched Dudley unwrap the racing bike, a video camera, a remote control airplane, sixteen new computer games, and a VCR. He was ripping the paper off a gold wristwatch when Aunt Petunia came back from the telephone looking both angry and worried.” (Pg.16) From this sentence alone I inferred that this story was taking place around the late 80’s-early 90’s. The rest of the story takes place his first year at Hogwarts, Sept 1991 - June 1992. One especially important date in this book is Harry’s birthday! Though not mentioned in the book, the boy who lived shares a birthday with his author: July 31st. Rowling's life greatly affected her writing. She went through so much. At age 17, she dropped out of college, her mother died when she was 25, and at age 26 she suffered a miscarriage. Despite this Rowling married, but it became an abusive relationship. Though her marriage became more turbulent, her daughter was born. At age 28, she went through a bitter divorce and went into a deep depression. By age 29, she was a single mother living only on welfare. At age 30 Rowling wanted to end her life, but she directed all her passion into doing what she did best: writing. At age 31 J.K Rowling published her first book. Through her writing J.K Rowling recovered from her depression and became a successful writer. Despite all that she had been through Rowling was able to pull herself together by writing one of the most well known books to date… Harry Potter! “We do not need magic to transform our world.
