As a literary genre, Magical Realism stands with its own methodology. With this, reality conforms to a degree wherein characters behave naturally amidst their environment, despite exposure to the seemingly surreal. Within the genre of Magical Realism, one finds that a variety of elements constitute it, each warping the text in a way of its own. T.H. White’s book, The Sword In The Stone, tells the story about how Merlyn the wizard taught Wart, the future King Arthur, leadership and heroic qualities. In the article “Are Heros Born, Or Can They Be Made?”, by Jonah Lehrer, it discusses Phil Zimbardo, a psychologist, and his approach to teaching leadership and heroic qualities. Merlyn and Phil Zimbardo’s approaches to teacher their pupils have similarities and differences. To teach Wart, Merlyn sends him to different leaderships, transformed as an animal, where Wart examines the leader, their type of ruling, and the subjects under that leader’s rule.

Magical realism is all about the way one views the world. It conveys reality that differs from the realities experienced in some modern cultures today. People who experience different realities can believe in these non objective realities due to their own beliefs. These stories show us the world through different eyes. It gives people the experience of viewing the world as many others see it.
Throughout the centuries, indisputable morals remain constant, but other values have been altered. One definite value that remains important to all cultures is courage. In the epic poem Beowulf, the moral of bravery appears quite frequently exemplified by the title character Beowulf. A fictional personage who exemplifies the theme of valor today is Harry Potter. Every magic realism story has a hidden meaning in it. Even though there is magic and mystical events occuring in the stories the writer makes it believable that the events could occur in human society. There are two main types of magic realism. One is where there are small elements of magic placed throughout the story and the characters do not act like they are magical. The second is where there is one main element of magic and the characters will distinguish it as not normal, but will not react to it in a way that people would normally react.

I personally have not read any of the Harry Potter series during my childhood, but once I have enrolled in Professor Fox’s class I have recently just finished Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. Throughout my readings of these two books I have had many observations on certain aspects of the story that I would not have noticed when I was younger. These three aspects that I can’t imagine as a child noticing is how the Dursleys abused Harry, the stance on gender, and prejudgement based on appearance.
