Harry Truman was the 33rd President. Truman was President through many of the US. Wars including: World War II, The Cold War, and the Korean War. Harry Truman has done many significant things for the US. Truman started out as a judge in Jackson County, Missouri, and worked his way up to US Senator, and then Vice President before he was President. Truman was one of the least popular US Presidents, but now 70 years later he fascinates many people. Why? President Truman was just a farm boy from Lamar, Missouri. While he was in the army, Truman met a close friend of James Pendergast, the nephew of Tom Pendergast, who was the Democratic boss of Kansas City. This friendship led Truman to overseer of highways for Jackson County. After serving one year Truman was elected judge for Jackson County in 1922. In 1934, Truman was selected as the candidate for United States senator. He won the Democratic nomination in a three-man race and was elected senator from Missouri. He was reelected in 1940. At the Democratic National Convention in June 1944, Harry Truman won the 1944 Vice President election. That all ended soon when Franklin D Roosevelt died only 2 weeks after the election. Harry Truman then took office as president on April 12th 1945.
After Truman became President, he learned about the top secret project to develop an atomic bomb. On July 16, 1945,a successful atomic bomb was tested in, New Mexico. Truman had to decide whether the bomb should be used against Japan. An invasion on Japan was being planned. If the bomb worked it would save a quarter of a million American lives. Truman suggested that the United States warn Japan that, if they didn’t surrender, the bomb would be dropped. Japan refused to Surrender. Truman supported the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), which occurred in 1949.This was a military alliance of the democratic nations, including the United States, Canada, France, the United Kingdom and eight other countries.
The Korean War began as a civil war between North and South Korea. The conflict became international when the U.S.joined to support South Korea. On June 25th, 1950 Truman ordered American troops to enter Korea. War broke out along the 38th parallel. The conflict left Americans frustrated and hurt Truman’s popularity.
Although Truman was eligible to run for another Presidential term, he announced in March 1952 that he would not run again. Harry Truman left office on January 20th, 1953. After his Presidency Harry and Bess Truman traveled by train from Washington to their home in Independence Missouri. In 1955, Truman published the first volume of his memoirs the second volume in 1956. Truman died at age 88 on December 26, 1972 of stomach complications. He was buried in the courtyard of the Truman Library. Bess Truman died at age 97 in 1982. She was buried beside him at the Truman
