Dexter Morgan, who is portrayed by Michael C. Hall, was only a child when his mother was found murdered by a chainsaw. Harry Morgan, an officer on the case, found his brother and him days later sitting in a pool of her blood. During the day Morgan spends his time as a blood splatter analyst for the Miami Metro Police Department. As a blood splatter analyst, he spends most of his time working cases for the homicide division, since that is the department that investigates most murders. Ironically, during the day he works in a laboratory; however, during the night he is a serial killer.

Hence, he explained to Dexter that if he ever had an impulse to kill, he should only kill those undeserving of life, murderers. Harry instilled in Dexter a way to live his life the most moralistic way he was capable of. These sets of rules that Dexter had to live by were referred to as “Harry’s Code.” These rules were put into place to both protect Dexter from going to jail as well as channel his impulses in the healthiest manner possible. The first and foremost rule was to never get caught because it would result in going to prison or even worse execution. The other rules are to prevent Dexter from getting caught. Secondly, he is never to kill an innocent. Therefore, before killing a person, he researches them comprehensively. Additionally, Dr. Evelyn Vogel created a stipulation to the killing innocents rule by saying that it is only acceptable if the innocent witnesses the event. This stipulation was created in case he needed to protect himself. Other minor rules include never making a scene, faking emotions to fit into society, never getting emotionally involved, and never leaving any traces of his murders. Dexter almost unfaltering lives by this code, except when he has few slip-ups as any other human makes
