Has The American Justice System Treat The White And Black Community Equal?

943 Words4 Pages

Although some may say that the justice system in America treats the white and black communities equally, it is clear that the justice system creates inequality in incarceration rates because of the unequal opportunities for the black community to achieve the American Dream. The American justice system creates a separation between whites and blacks due to the increased levels of incarceration. The justice system has done little to no work to bring fairness and equity to the black community. In Source A, Brent Staples describes that the black community is often judged based on their physical physique rather than treating them as equals to the white community. “To her, the youngish black man – a broad six feet two inches with a beard and billowing …show more content…

These judgments segregate the black community from any other group, so they won’t hurt them. The black community has been pushed down the gutter many times, limiting their opportunities to achieve their goals. Minorities are humans too, who want to get jobs to provide for their families and get a proper education, but are being diminished based on the color of their skin. Another example of the justice system failing the black community is the image of a black man being arrested by a white police officer (source B). The white community is seen as inferior, which means they are given more rights, judged less, and treated like they are on top of the world. Source A describes a black male journalist who was mistaken for a killer and held at gunpoint. “Black men trade tales like this all the time.” This quote shows the likelihood of a mistaken black crime because it is very common for people to blame the black community even if they did not commit the crime. This also shows the repetition of the justice system failing the black community because it is falsely accusing them of crimes they do not commit, reducing their chances of living the lives they have dreamed of. Being put in jail goes on the permanent record, which reduces the chances of getting a good job and, therefore, hurts those who are trying to find a job when they have been placed in jail for a crime they did not commit. Furthermore, Source C describes the wrongdoing of the justice system and how it is affecting the black community. “The lack of jury diversity results from courts using unrepresentative lists to common potential jurors.” This quote demonstrates the failure of the justice system since the jury mostly consists of whites who are biased against the black community and will do anything in their power to put them away. The main goal of the United States is to have diversity and equal rights
