Life is a journey and we change over time as challenges, people and opportunities come our way. Whenever those things come our way, it can change us as a person and it can affect how we are for the rest of our lives. Brian in the story Hatchet is an unfortunate 13-year-old boy who becomes stranded in the Canadian wilderness. He is the main character of the book and throughout the different adventures in the forest, he develops new skills and also develops into a new person as difficult challenges and problems come his way. When Brian survived the plane crash, he was thrown into a world that was very much different from the lifestyle he lived in before. He couldn’t rely on anyone or anything because no one else was there. If he wanted food, he couldn’t ask anyone to cook for him and if he wanted warmth, he couldn’t turn on the heater. If Brian wanted something to be done, no one would be able to do it except for him, the only tools he had was his knowledge and his hatchet. As the novel progresses, it shows that Brian changes as he is able to use these tools to develop new skills, such as making a fire, making weapons, and catching animals. In the novel, it shows that Brian was able to make a fire by himself. This skill filled him with a sense of accomplishment and it made him feel like he was the ‘new’ Brian as he was solely able to do it by himself. Brian was able to achieve so many things by himself and he was able to release his full potential which changed him because he wasn’t like the same person he was in the city, who relied on people or things to do the job for him. When Brian created the fire he was yelling in excitement, “I've got fire! I've got it, I've got it, I've got it!” This accomplishment fills Brian with pride and Brian then knows that this lifestyle has enabled him to achieve things that we once thought were achievable. After the terrible crash in the Canadian wilderness, Brian's body goes through many changes in the novel but mainly, Brian’s mindset, his personality and his determination changes and he becomes full of tough hope. As unpredictable challenges come his way, Brian is at first very shocked and confused as his lifestyle changes in a blink of an eye. Brian has to live in a lifestyle that is very new to him, he learns that food does not come on a silver platter, one mistake can make a huge downfall, and that if he wants to get something done, whining is not the answer. Many challenges bring Brian down and he falls into a deep hole of sorrow, but Brian overcomes them as he becomes full of tough hope, strong determination and perseverance. It shows in the novel when Brian is full of tough hope is when the tornado crushed away all his hard work until it became a big pile of debris. Instead of pitying himself or falling into a deep hole of sorrow again, Brian says “Come on, he thought, baring his teeth in the darkness—come on. Is that the best you can do? Is that all you can hit me with—a moose and a tornado?” It shows that Brian does not care that he was thrown back into phase one, it shows that he is now full of tough hope. Brian is even so apathetic and immune from the incident that he starts fixing the mess straight away, despite the excruciating pain in his body. During Brian's journey in the wilderness,
