Alexander Fischer Ms.Glick English 10 7 June 2024 The Demon Tide theme, by Laurie Forrest In today's age, the world seems like it's a good and safe place to live, for the most part, you are correct, but people within the LGBTQ community, suffer a total of 32.9% of the total hate crimes in the United States every year. In The Demon Tide by Laurie Forrest, Gardenaria is no different. Many Gardenariens are involved in a religion praising a god known as the ancient one. Doing so brings about a distaste for those who feel love differently. Among them is Trystan Gardener, a gay man who was forced to hide his passion towards some due to the risk of being jailed, or executed. Sooner or later, an opportunity shows itself. We can see this when Vothe is discussing being with Trystan with his older brother. “ ‘You can't be with the grandson of the Black Witch.’ I look sidelong at my elder brother, Gethendrille ‘Keeping track of my every action now?’ I chide, defiance sparking ‘You must at least take care, our family will cast you out if news gets to them.’ ‘But just yesterday, Trystan saved a dozen refugees-’ he cuts me off with a hand up ‘You know what that witch did to our family, He dangerous, for your sake and the families, stay away from him.’ ” Geth Vothe understands that Trystan is not the enemy, so much so that he fell in love. But for as long as the people know who his grandma is, they will never stop hating him. Overall, Trystans suffering is entirely preventable. If people can simply understand that the lineage and race of a person does not define them. If Trystan were not Gardenarien, he would be highly decorated with medals for all the lives he saved. If people can move beyond their biases and prejudices and judge people based on what THEY do, are, and stand for, not only would the entire continent of Fayja be a happier and safer place, but our entire world would be a utopia.
