In chapter two of the Scarlet Letter, Hawthorne alludes to the Virgin Mary, “Had there been a papist among the crowd of Puritans, he might have seen in this beautiful woman… an object to remind him of the image of Divine Maternity”, (Hawthorne 53), to compare her to Hester Prynne. Mary was the mother of Jesus, a sinless being who came to save the human race.
