The relationship between the United States and the Native American tribes has never been a supportive one, challenging at best. In the past 200 years the relationship between the two has put pressure on Congress’ claim of a world power over tribes and tribal nation’s natural sovereignty, one that is even older than that of the United States of America. This tension, which comes from a sense of where the status of the Tribe fits into the United States Constitution, is creating a slippery slope for the Native American people. But in the book, the biggest question Pommersheim raises in the introduction is: can the modern Indian people escape their federally forced dependence, to become truly self-defining?
Spiritual ceremonies and traditions have been and still remain a huge part of Native American culture. Through these ceremonies, often performed on the sacred lands found on public government property, individuals believe that spiritual harmony of life can be maintained and achieved. These ceremonies, attended by many individuals, both Native American and Christian, took place on rural sacred land that the Native Americans held close to their hearts. However, over time, tribes were taken from their sacred lands and moved to areas where their practices were restricted or completely cut off. Throughout Sacred Lands and Religious Freedom, Vine Delora argues that the problem lies within basic human understanding.
Throughout the nineteenth century, most white settlers viewed Native Americans as lesser people and who were no better than animals. However, the thoughts about the survivability of Native Americans were in sharp contrast. Many commentators believed that American Indians were unable to evolve to sustain their prehistoric lifestyle and would soon die off. Others thought American Indians were instead able to endure the rapid change and would survive. With rumors and myths spreading rapidly, it became abundantly clear that in the nineteenth century Native Americans were widely viewed as a dying race although there were the occasional reports on the success and survivability of American Indian groups.
Native Americans were greatly affected by the expansion of the United States during the 1800s. As the U.S. moved west, they stole large amounts of Native American land by settling the land and killing the Natives who once lived there. Also during this time, their culture was being taken from them due to assimilation. While United States citizens were expanding into the west, many Native American lives were lost. They were also responsible for destroying a major food and supply source for Native Americans.
In a healthcare setting you will see different cultures that will come and go. It is very important to know how to deal with each culture so that you can help them while still making sure they are comfortable. Native Americans have many different characteristics because of the different tribes from all over the world. Healthcare providers should be familiar with them so they know how to distinguish them if needed. While knowing their characteristics they should also know how to interact with Native Americans as well since their culture is a lot different than ours, we want to make sure that we don’t disrespect them.
Diseases: Even though through the Columbian Exchange we were able to gain many great materials and much knowledge about the other people who occupy our planet, many diseases where transferred to the Native Americans. Native Americans had not had the chance to gain an immunity to the different diseases that the Europeans had already come in contact with. This caused major issues when death started to treat the Native Americans like a close friend. Arrival and Introduction: Christopher Columbus, a great discoverer and also a carrier of diseases not known to almost wipe out a race.
The Puritans were a strong unified religious community that centered their lives and their community on a specific set of beliefs. They believed that life was a test and those who passed this test would not only be successful, but also be delivered to holy blessedness all their lives and in the next. On the other hand, those who failed this test would face the consequences of a life damned by the devil. Notably in addition to that belief, they were God’s advocates and God’s law were their political laws. One specific facet of the Puritan belief system discussed in this paper is religious exclusiveness.

I am writing this letter to tell you that me and couple of the men of the ship are doing fine, some of our men have died from hunger and from the ship crash that we’ve had recently, and here I am with the men in an island being welcomed by the native indians that helped us through. The native indians are extremely welcoming people in my point of view, they helped us when the ship crashed, they gave us food, water, and shelters for us to live in since we didn't have anything anymore. The native americans are the opposite of what I thought, when I saw them after the crash I thought they would kill us and sacrifice us to their gods, when actually they are celebrating and trying to fill us with happiness, instead of thinking about our lost of the ship. They are emotionally understanding people of what I've seen, they felt our sorrow and sadness of losing our ship from the recent occurring hurricane that led us to this island.
Spirituality has a large influence in traditional Native American culture. Every aspect of the culture is basically built around spirituality in some shape or form. To Native Americans spirituality is a way of life and not just a part of your life you practice, like Catholicism. Their spirituality can be viewed in their clothing, artwork, dances, celebrations, and works of everyday life. The spirituality of Native Americans is constantly practiced through ceremonies and celebrations which vary depending on the tribe.
There are two important aspects of Native American culture that I learned this semester. The first is the importance of women in Native communities. Their roles include building, farming, crafting, and decision-making. The men respect women because they are the source of life—human and agriculture. Secondly, Native Americans are some of the most resilient people because of their historical and contemporary oppression from the Spanish settlers and United States government, respectively.
Disease was the silent killer and the main reason for Native American depopulation in the 15th, 16th and 17th centuries. Some diseases that were the most contagious and deadly were smallpox, malaria, yellow fever, and syphilis. These diseases, mainly smallpox, contributed to vast Native American depopulation and what was known as “virgin soil epidemics” (Virgin Soil Epidemics). This phrase means that the Native Americans are the virgin soil and that they have no prior exposure to the new diseases that were brought to them by Europeans.
Since the beginning of this country Native American Indians have been an underserved population in rights, education, and healthcare. Healthcare for Native American Indians has been guaranteed today though treaties, executive orders, laws, and acts. However, Indians were not even considered citizens of the United States until 1968 and it was a very long haul to get to these rights and have substantial health care provided. Native American Healthcare has an exhaustive list of laws and policies but have four main laws that explain the basics of their healthcare system. Native Americans first health care policy was the Snyder Act of 1921.
