Before Columbus arrived, Native Americans were already here in present day United States. They already had established their civilizations and the continent was filled with several hundred tribes with their own culture. However, centuries later their population massively declined due to various reasons. The decline of Native Americans was contributed to by reasons such as constant and relentless wars against them, their own illusion of a wrong prophecy and dishonest acts and treaties made to eliminate them and their culture. Americans in the mid 1800’s had imagined the west to be “virgin lands” that was awaiting the settlements of white people.
School textbooks state the fact that there was already people living in America when Columbus arrived on land from his voyage, however the main focus is on the discovery of new land and the settlement of Europeans. Nearly, twenty million Natives lived on the land know known as America. On Columbus’s first voyage he was lost and thought he had landed in India, but had come upon the Caribbean Island, land of Indigenous people. His mistake of being lost and thinking he landed in India is how Indigenous people received the name
In the late 1800s, tensions were rising between white Americans and Native Americans. The white Americans wanted the Native Americans to conform to their definition of civility. The Native Americans had clung tightly to their culture and religious practices during a time of continuous encroachment and governmental pressure by the white Americans. By this time, Native Americans had already been forced westward onto reservations through government action. Andrew Jackson had set this migration in motion earlier in the century, and the migration pattern would later be referred to as the “Trail of Tears”.

Jonathan’s family is from the Table Mountain Rancheria of California located in Fresno County, California. The Table Mountain Rancheria is a federally recognized tribe of Native American people from the Chukchansi band of Yokuts and the Monache tribe. Jonathan did not live on the reservation nor did his parents but his great-great grandparents did. Jonathan’s family composition consists of his parents, his siblings and his grandparents. Native American traditional family composition consists of extended family members made up of blood and non-blood relatives.

Native Americans were greatly affected by the expansion of the United States during the 1800s. As the U.S. moved west, they stole large amounts of Native American land by settling the land and killing the Natives who once lived there. Also during this time, their culture was being taken from them due to assimilation. While United States citizens were expanding into the west, many Native American lives were lost. They were also responsible for destroying a major food and supply source for Native Americans.
Thomas Jefferson, the third president and the author of the Declaration of Independence once declared, “Honesty is the best chapter in the book of wisdom. Both Native Americans and people today hold truth as one of the most important traits to have. Liars and cheats are often considered horrible by both groups of people. People who tell the truth are praised in some Native American stories. Without truth, both of these cultures would be completely different.
Religion and Colonization In the New World was oportunity for all Europe, Spaniards, English, Portuguese, and even French. This new continent was able do give them gold, silver, wood, even a commercial trade route to China, or just an equality on their societies. But there was too many ways to atach the success way, those ways were in fact leaded by the religion.
Ranging from the south Alleghenies mountain range all the way down to the south of Georgia and far west of Alabama, lived the Cherokee Indians. They were a powerful detached tribe of the Iroquoian family and were commonly called Tsaragi which translates into "cave people. " This tribe was very prominent in what is now called the U.S, but over time has been split up or run out of their land because of social or political encounters with the new settlers from Europe. Despite the dispersion or the split amongst this tribe, they still obtained their core religious beliefs, practices and ceremonies. Their detailed belief system, fundamental beliefs, significant meanings, and their connection to song and dance make up their religious system.
I am forever grateful to have won the healthier living scholarship. The scholarship has greatly motivated me to move ahead and become closer to my goal of healthier living and that of motivating others to adopt the same healthy lifestyle. As of now, I have had substantial progress and achievements. For instance, I started the program June 3, 2016, at 342 pounds, and I am down to 259 pounds as of today. My A1 C is now 5.3 non-diabetic range.
