Reid begins chapter 7 discussing the Beveridge model of health care. The first aspect that stood out to me is that the sales tax rate in Britain in 17.5%. Reid is right, that amount does make us Americans cringe, especially me! I can’t even imagine going to buy a new shirt and getting taxed 17.5%, a huge increase from Michigan’s 6% tax rate. Throughout the article, the audience can see how the author Claire Parker uses Ethos, Hasty Generalization, and Definition to provide a clearer understanding of the Health Care system and its flaws. Parker uses the rhetorical device Ethos to emphasize the importance of United States citizens that do not have access to health insurance. The director of the Global Health Policy Center, J. Stephen Morrison, notes that countries smaller than the US “benefit from a stronger societal consensus around the place that health occupies in the social compact.”

The system is designed to treat diseases rather than preventing them and promoting wellness. In our healthcare industry, there are many different contributors that provide and make up our system. These intermediaries include suppliers, manufacturers, consumers, patients, providers, policy and regulations. All these members have a key role in the functionality of the health care industry; however, each role has its positives and negatives.
When one thinks of the health care system, words that usually come to mind are safety, protection, quality care and the like. We live in a very progressive, very industrialized country as Americans. We have made many technological advances in our sciences. In other words, we are a developed country that provides many opportunities to those who reside here. The foundation of our country is based off of equality, fairness, and justice.
Before we look at the different Social/Psychological Determinants of Health it is important firstly to define what a social determinant of health is. According to the World Health Organization (2017) “The social determinants of health are the conditions in which people are born, grow, live, work and age.” These conditions are as a result of a wide range of factors that are ultimately governed by the way in which money, power and specific resources are shared at different levels including those at global, national and local levels. We have all been a part of and will experience different social determinants of health throughout our lives but it is the standard at which we experience these determinants that will ultimately lead onto them affecting our health or ultimately leaving us unaffected. The Social Determinants of Health which I am going to examine include • Education • Unemployment • Stress • Living Conditions • Cultural Norms.
The nature of the current debate surrounding the implementation of universal healthcare in America is troubling because it is comprised almost entirely of pragmatic arguments void of concern for the principles behind the project. Before one asks how much a thing will cost, how it will be organized, or whether “the uninsured” will benefit, one should ask whether enacting universal healthcare is in keeping with the values and principles of the American experiment. In other words, is universal healthcare good for America? Universal healthcare is not good for America.

Healthcare in the United States is in desperate need of reform. There are several rationales to further explain this proposition. As an illustration, the Declaration of Independence states our unalienable rights: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. In other words, every individual should be entitled to healthcare as it preserves life and promotes the general welfare. The federal government should, therefore, enact a program of universal health to better protect and serve all of its citizens.
For both the uninsured group and those who are eligible for government assistance because of their low economic position, access to health is limited by the number of private providers willing to treat them. In many cases private providers are linked to particular private health insurance companies and won 't accept patients outside their network. These people must then rely on the overburdened public health system for care, and as such usually only seek treatment in emergencies. The public health system, while filled with competent staff, is nevertheless restricted by its funding and can therefore not always provide all these patients with the best quality of care. These services are usually offered through a health care system made up of hospitals and physicians. Although, the health care system is set up to reduce or to prevent disease etc., there is a gap or disparity in the US health care system.
Health care should not be considered a political argument in America; it is a matter of basic human rights. Something that many people seem to forget is that the US is the only industrialized western nation that lacks a universal health care system. In my opinion, he has presented a clear-cut viewpoint that American health care is not producing results.
