Cayman Islands
The Cayman Islands are a series of islands in the Caribbean, they are made up 3 main islands called Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, Cayman Brac and there are multiple very small islands that surround the three main islands. Agriculture in the cayman islands accounts for a very little amount of the country”s income. There biggest incomes come from Tourism with the many hotels and resorts that are on the island and financial service. With most of the land there being taken up by all the hotels and resorts there is not much left for agriculture use which causes them to have to import most of their goods. Since the schools there run on the British education system the schools are pretty good and the literacy level is very high. The literacy rate is currently 98%. People mostly eat seafood based dishes like fish, conch, grouper, snapper, goat. Since that is what is mostly available to them because all other types of foods have to be imported and are expensive for families there to buy those kinds of things. Healthcare in the Cayman Islands is actually a lot better than most people would think. It is said that the future of healthcare in america is coming from the Caymans. In an article I read about healthcare in the Cayman Islands it said that there was recently a gathering there with over 2000 people. With all of the hotels and tourism areas and that is part of the reason there are not many farmers and 90 percent of the food that is consumed there is imported therefore it is more expensive to buy imported goods even though because there are no taxes in the Cayman islands other than an import tax also since more than 90 percent of the country’s GDP is the service industry like hotels and things of that sort, people there do not have many different job opportunities and the unemployment rate is 5.6 percent so lots of people there do not have jobs. Because there are not too many local farms and because the import tax is so high the food they can get from there is mostly seafood. Seafood is a large part of the Caymanians diets because they live on an island and fish and other foods of that sort are very common. With tourism accounting for over 75 percent of the GDP they gain a lot of money with almost 2 million tourists every year. There second biggest industry, after the tourism industry, is Financial service. With no direct taxation the islands are an offshore financial center that thrives with over 93,000 businesses registered there as of 2008.
