Masculinity is defined as “pertaining to or characteristic of a man or men; having qualities traditionally ascribed to men, as strength and boldness.” (www.dictionary.com) Masculinity reveals itself in many instances throughout the novel. The narrator attends the support group for men who have testicular cancer, Remaining Men Together. At this group, the narrator hears a man share how his ex-wife had a baby with her new husband because he himself couldn’t give her a child because of his testicular cancer; he breaks downs into tears which sadly in American society is a sign of weakness coming from a man.

Most aspects of mental illness are influenced by social factors (such as gender, social class, race and ethnicity, and household patterns) and social institutions (such as disability and social security systems, labor markets, and healthcare organizations).
Traditional roles of masculinity play a significant role in how many men experience their diagnosis with cancer. Pudrovska writes that “cancer poses a threat to the masculine identity because it entails lack of control over one's body and other consequences incompatible with traditional masculinity (Pudrovska 535) Arthur Frank’s narrative of his battle with colon cancer enforces the idea of cancer threatening traditional ideas of masculinity, particularly a lack of control over his body. Frank writes in great detail about death, and his fear of loosing control over his body within the narrative. Specifically, Frank describes the feeling of loosing control when he writes “my body had become a kind of quicksand, and I was sinking into myself,
“Kitchen” by Banana Yoshimoto is a highly successful book winning major awards such as 1987 Kaien Best Newcomer Artists. Whether you are interested in Japanese literature or not, you will certainly find this a worthwhile read. It deals with issues that that we can face in our own daily lives and the way it is written is also pleasant. I have read this book recently and enjoyed it very much. In my speech I will be particularly talking about how the writer approaches to transgender identity and death in “Kitchen”.
Depression, anxiety, anger management, paranoia or post-traumatic stress disorder while the list goes on which is quite understandable due to the circumstances but “many are left untreated”(Covenant House Toronto). Some are physically disabled since birth or have gotten in an accident in which they could not recover from or do not have the care needed. Others are so emotionally scarred that a normal life is impossible to adapt back
Nearly one in five Americans can suffer from any type of mental illnesses.
Male vulnerability is in reference to the way nature seems to be stacked against males. Boys are more likely to be miscarried during their mother's labor. This may result in the males having such problems as stuttering, SIDS, bedwetting, and mental retardation. During development, boys have a greater chance in experiencing learning difficulties while reading and speaking. They also are more prone to have health problems.
I have had a negative experience in the healthcare system because of my gender, it is a personal story but based on the subject I feel like I can share, I received my first routine pap smear when I was 17, I had a lot of anxiety about it and I was very tense and nervous as most women are for their first pap smear. My OBGYN at the time who was a middle aged man literally said in response to my nervousness “I hope you do not act like this during intercourse” I was so stunned and embarrassed I didn’t know what to say to his rude comment. Because of that experience I only go to female providers now especially for my feminine health, looking back as an adult I wish I would have told him off and reported him for his comment. Now I will be telling you about the effects of exercise on one’s mental health and resiliency. The University of Texas Medicine performed a study consisting solely of people with depressive disorders and had half of them do 30 minutes of physical exercise a day, while the other half were told to make no changes to their levels of physical activity. The exercising group claimed to be feeling better now compared to before the study, and the other group had no change. Many studies have worked to document a relationship between exercising and mental health, like a different study from the University of Texas Medicine which concluded that people who work out regularly are half as likely to have depression compared to people who do not. The amount of physical activity recommended to get mental health benefits is the same of that of obtaining academic benefits, which is 30-60 minutes per day.
