Life is full of events that define and change a person in varying ways depending on the essence of that event. Many times when a tragic event occurs in a person's life that person pushes those they were close to away. Once alone that person usually begins to slide into a dark abyss that is filled with anger and self-pity. When one arrives in this abyss it is almost impossible to escape its deathly grasp and begins to alter ones normal thinking into a dark and clouded mindset. At these times any bad event no matter how insignificant seems to be trying to destroy them. Accompanied by this mindset makes that person believe that those who were once their friends have become their enemies who strive to ruin their life. After Julia died Robert fell into the habit of drinking his sorrows away trying to forget his loss. Then after months of drowning in drunkenness, he begins to start performing shows again to occupy his time. Robert’s deep loss is not forgotten but the pain eases with each performance for his passion for magic cannot be ignored. Then one day Robert sees Alfred performing his own show as a stage magician and anger and hate for him rises in Robert’s gut. This burning desire comes from Robert’s belief that Alfred is truly the one who killed his beloved. So a desire to kill Alfred rose up in Robert and he plotted to kill him then and there. At that time Alfred was performing a new act that he called the bullet catch, where he has a member of the audience unknowingly shoot a blank at him. When Alfred randomly picked an audience member he unknowingly picked Robert for he was in a disguise. Robert full of anger puts a bullet in the gun and aims to kill Alfred for the death of his wife. Luckily Robert trembling with rage missed and only shot off two of Alfred’s fingers and then turned and ran away. In retaliation, Alfred went to one of Roberts shows and ruined his performance and getting Robert kicked out of performing his shows at the theatre he was performing. This event tore away at Robert’s mind consuming him with an insatiable rage that could only be quenched by the blood of his greatest foe, Alfred. Robert seeing that Alfred had new and innovating ideas for his performances loathed and hated him for Roberts only desire left in life is to be the greatest magician who ever lived. The only person who stood between Robert and greatness was his once best friend, now foe, Alfred Borden. Robert once filled with such happiness before his wife's death then grief after, is
