Sustainable Design
Sustainable, or environmentally conscious, design is a design philosophy that promotes strategic business decisions that will reduce the negative impacts each phase of the design process has on the environment. Sustainable design aims to reduce an organisation’s consumption of non-renewable resources, reduce waste in the production process, and create a healthy and productive working environment.
A business can implement a sustainable design policy be optimising site potential and performance, using alternative sources of energy and environmentally friendly products, protecting and conserving water as much as possible, and optimising maintenance policies to reduce waste in the production process. The main title is found at the top of the cover and is made of a very simplistic, sans-serif, with some of the letters being turned upside down. A subtitle is found in a black band at the bottom of the cover and uses the same font as the main title, though the type is much smaller and no letters have been inverted.
Content: The blotted portraits, which were originally intended to be used as the back cover of the album came to symbolise the “obliteration of identity.” The fact that the band member’s faces were blotted out represented the recurring theme of “identity disturbance” that is explored throughout the album and represented the fact that the band members felt that they were unable to “Remain in the Light.” The war planes on the back cover came to represent the Iranian Hostage Crises of 1979 to 1981.
Colour: Kalman has used very bright and complementary colours. The red and blue stand out starkly and the white font on a black band ensures that the titles can easily be read. The use of these colours creates a sense of danger and heartache, and the blotted out faces creates a very harsh and unforgiving
