Speak, by Laurie Halse Anderson, is a story about Melinda Sordino. Melinda was an incoming freshman at Merryweather High, and was entering ninth grade with no friends. During the first school assembly, the new girl in town, Heather, introduced herself to Melinda, sparking somewhat of a friendship. Melinda also came across her ex-best friend, Rachel. Rachel had mouthed the words “I hate you” to Melinda, even though all she wanted to do was to tell Rachel what really happened at the infamous summer party.

In the beginning of this book the audience meets Melinda as she is the main character and she describes her first day of high school starting with an assembly. Throughout the book you read about her life but she goes back to the past recalling of something that happened at the end of the summer; in a couple of instances she comes across someone that she refers to as “IT”. When reading you don't know who this “IT” is but it is developed over the story by her having flashbacks to that night or dropping a hint of what happened. The name of my book is The Ghost of Fossil Glen by Cynthia Defelice it was published on March 25, 1998. Cynthia Defelice wrote the book because as a child her mother read to her and that’s when she started loving books but it wasn't until she was 36 that she decided she wanted books for children. Other than being a writer she also owns a farm with her husband who is retired and she want to improve her farm. Defelice has written 16 novel and 12 picture books for young readers three of her books are The Ghost of Cutler Creek,Fort, and Wild Life. In the beginning of the story the setting is on a cliff in Fossil Glen and moves on to her school and her home.

It 's a jaw-dropping book that will leave you wanting more as the author Laurie writes in a crisp and clear way describing the young girl Melinda’s horrific story and how it unfolds. The author 's tone gives off the vibe of a young frighted girl which I find really enhances this sad, but exhilarating story. This story taught me to always speak up for myself and to never let anyone take advantage of me. It is implied Connie’s was almost forced to give her life for her families quickly makes the young girl realized what she got herself into .Reading this short story really opens the mind of each person who reads it .
