1.1 Scope of the study
This study will point up the abuse of power and the relationship between genders by analyzing the heroine in English play and the heroine in Arabic play. This analysis spotlights on the Negative Face, the negative Face Threating Acts attacking the level of the hearer by using the theory of politeness from Face management 's approach.
1.2 Objectives of the study
The main objectives of this study is to explore how the negative face which used by the wife in " Hedda Gabler" by Ibsen and by the mother in Fathia E-Assal 's " The night before the wedding"/lajlt a:lhna/.Moreover, this study aims to explain how power is abused by the heroine in both plays. "Positive Face" is what we can call to be accepted and to be appreciated by the other. It is also the want to be desirable by others and to have a good impression.(Yule,1996,P61).Moreover, to Brown & Levinson (1987), positive self-image is the wants of participants to be liked by others members(P.312) 1.4.4 Power in Discourse
Power in Discourse exposes the inequality between participants. It may be called "unequal encounter ".The function of power in discourse is to highlight that the participants who have the power control the powerful participants. There are there types of "constraints". First one is contents; rely on the spoken subject or the actions. The second one is relations; it is said that relation takes part in the power in discourse. The third one is the subject, which people deal with (Norman Fairclough, 1989, P.43-46). 1.4.5 Face Threating Acts
Face Threating Acts is responsible for harming the self-image .It also has the ability to threaten Hearer 's "Positive Face" by refusing what he agrees on, or to harm the "Negative Face" of the hearer by having a negation effect on Hearer 's free will of choice.
