The Chinese Dynasties are some of the most well-known empires in history. The topic of this report is on the book, ‘When China Ruled the Seas: The Treasure Fleet of The Dragon Throne’ by Louise Levathes. This book was written to narrate the history of China’s gigantic treasure fleet and the policies and events that changed the Ming Dynasty and eventually reached a global influence. Unfortunately, this book also gives a plethora of historical tidbits which the author could’ve explained all at the beginning at the book so she didn’t have to constantly look back at another event for reference and explain why she bought it up.
In “The Day the Cisco Kid Shot John Wayne” by Nash Candelaria, it portrays examples on how hegemony is being used in this story. In the beginning of the story, we see that Junior’s father wants to move into town so that Junior can get better schooling and learn more English since “He’ll have to live in the English-speaking world.” (Candelaria 8). We see hegemony here because English is used throughout the whole country and knowing this language can mean intelligence and educated. Those who spoke another language other than English, was to be seen as not educated and not accepted by others.
The Yuan dynasty also known as the Mongol dynasty, was considered a brief irrelevance in China’s long history. There are many arguments to say that the Yuan dynasty did in fact make its mark on China’s history. Whereas others argue that the Yuan dynasty was in fact, a irrelevance in China’s history that does not need to be as noted as other dynasties of greater importance. The Yuan dynasty came to pass after the Song dynasty was destroyed by the Mongols river battles and sieges against them. This was only the start of the Mongols reign and need of power.
In the Classical era, two very comparable empires carried out the cycle of rising and falling on the far western and eastern ends of Eurasia. While only Rome had to struggle to grow from a single city to an enormous empire, both Rome and Han China rose to power on the backs of their brutal armies. And, the fall of both empires negatively impacted the life of common people as well as the cultivation of culture across Eurasia. In the beginning of its reign, the Roman empire labored to grow from an impoverished city-state into a more expansive political force.
The Chinese civilization from 100 C.E. to 600 C.E. rose as one of the major unified empires. While this society grew, there were aspects of culture and politics stayed the same but many changes also occurred. As the empire developed, family units and social classes remained stagnant. Despite these continuities, changes such as the popularity of Buddhism within society due to Indian missionaries and a shift in political rule occurred. During the time period 100 C.E. to 600 C.E. the family unit system remained intact despite the intellectual advances.
The Yuan Dynasty was a successful dynasty. They unified all of China under one ruler, something that hadn’t been done in over 300 years. They re-built the 51 mile long Grand Canal, and they made advancements in mathematics and astronomy. Trade expanded, and Kublai Khan had his military protect the Silk Road trade routes that connected Asia to Mediterranean Europe and Northern Africa. It is difficult for anyone, regardless of technology or knowledge to unify a landmass as large as China under one ruler, but Genghis and Kublai Khan did it swiftly and effectively.
The roman and Han empire, although two completely different civilizations, yet despite that both fell due to similar key contributors. The Roman Empire and the Han Dynasty fell due to alike reasons. For both empires weak leadership and corruption, economic collapse and social disorder were three of the main contributor’s factors to their decline. Both the Roman Empire and Han Dynasty endured corruption that weakened their supremacy.
France gained control of Indochina by invading and taking over the regions. The United States became an imperial power by invading, annexing, buying, or building countries infrastructure. The United States annexed the Hawaiian Islands and Puerto Rico to gain their resources. They also built the Panama Canal and used it as a source of income for the US. Russia expanded into the Asia through Persia, the Caucasus regions, the nomads of Central Asia, and many areas of the Middle East.
The Han Dynasty was founded by Liu Bang in 206 BCE and lasted for 426 years until corruption and weak leaders resulted in the breakup of the Han Dynasty into 3 kingdoms in 220 CE. The Han Dynasty was strong and had many achievements in its golden age. A golden age is a time of prosperity and new inventions in an empire. A golden age normally occurs when a new leader is selected to run the empire. The philosophy of government was Confucianism, and the style of government was a bureaucracy, which was when the emperor used many government officials to help him make decisions.
