Taonga translates to treasure, taonga can be anything from property to goods, it also includes intellectual property and resources. It is often highly prized and of great significance. The Hei-tiki is a taonga which dates back centuries. Derived from the East Polynesian tiki, the Hei-tiki is a neck pendant, which celebrates "the advent of mankind" rather than a single ancestor (Atholl, Binney, Harris, 40). Hei-Tikis are thought to protect the wearer, acting as a spiritual guardian and medium. Anderson describes the Hei-Tiki in 1777 as a “memorial to those whom they held most dear” (40).
