Belle Gunness: Hell’s Belle - The Birth & Upbringing of Baleful Belle Belle Gunness was a heinous serial killer who murdered between 1884 and 1908 and was believed to have murdered over 40 people. Throughout history, Gunness has also been referred to as “Hell’s Belle” and “Lady Bluebeard” (Rosewood 201). Six feet and over 200 pounds, Belle Gunness could effortlessly control her victims (BE2).
The fifth chapter hits on the tough subject of women and black liberation. There were many African American women that could address both group’s concerns, that referred to themselves as black feminists. The D.C. chapter of the National Black Feminist Organization focused on many of the same issues as the mainstream groups; for example, the Equal Rights Amendment and equal employment opportunities. Their organizational activities demonstrated how black women were trying to advance gender equality through ending racial oppression. The next chapter focuses on lesbian feminism, specifically a group called the Furies.
In September of 1979, Audre Lorde, poet, spoke about the impossibility of dismantling the patriarchy through oppressive means. The black feminist woman, Lorde, who has cancer at the point of this speech, uses ethos, pathos, and logos in order to guilt the audience into making a change of how black feminists are represented. Ethos is the building of the author's credibility in order to become more persuasive because people tend to believe people who they deem likable or respectable. “I agreed to take part in a New York University Institute for the Humanities conference a year ago, with the understanding that I would be commenting upon papers dealing with the role of difference within the lives of American women: difference of race, sexuality, class, and age. The absence of these considerations weakens any feminist discussion of the personal and the political.”
In the article The Politics of Black Women’s Studies by Akasha Hull and Barbara Smith, Hull and Smith studiously literate the politics and controversy around the fundamentals of black women’s studies in the past and modern day. Furthermore, the ideology of the article falls under the premise that racism and prejudice are still current and prominent factors that affect the development of black women’s studies in the way it is taught in universities, and the role it takes upon the lives of black women. To begin, it is evident that the premise of the article is solely based on the pros and cons that derive from black women attempting to exist in a white man’s world by making a name for themselves in society. As I watched videos and interviews with people who associate themselves with the KKK, they believe that, President Barack Obama, is ignoring them. They do not feel heard, protected, or present in America. This theory affects the points raised in the book by putting the readers in an Aryan’s perspective. Even though the Feminist theory could be a theory used as a basis, but the Symbolic Interaction Theory would be better to use to study this issue.

The Critical Race Theory was developed by a group of feminist scholars who studied the ways “racism and sexism helped to create and reinforce a power structure that historically privileged white males had over other Americans”. In the past 20 years, critical race theorists have used slave history to prove how a negative image of black women has persisted. It is the opinion of many respected scholars that the Critical Race Theory is difficult to define with simple examples. Two female scholars Derrick Bell and Darlene Clark Hine gave detailed examples to clarify their claims that race and gender played a major role in how CRT scholars were able to demonstrate why slave owners created the “jezebel” and “mammy” stereotypes. The “jezebel” was a term that implied a black female slave was a primitive creature with uncontrollable sex urges which caused innocent white slave owners to lose self-control.
This essay examines how intersectionality impacts Black women, examining their various levels of struggle and the tenacity that defines their path. Crenshaw contends that comprehending intersectionality allows us to see the diverse identities of minority women and better grasp how various oppressive systems interact to produce compounded discrimination. She highlights the significance of viewing race, gender, and other social categories as linked components of one's identity rather than as separate and isolated issues. Black women reside at the intersection of race and gender, which exposes them to a unique set of issues that are sometimes disregarded or misunderstood. Black women face racism and sexism in predominantly White nations, making their experiences complex.
For an entire week I went without shaving my legs, one of my beauty rituals, something that I do almost every other day if not on a daily basis. I was not really sure what to expect during this time, I most certainly did not believe that it would make a difference for me. But right away I was able to sense changes when I realized how strange it felt to stop doing something that I did on a daily basis. Gender is a socially constructed form of identity but it is also racially constructed as well. Gender can be displayed through intersectional perspectives, you can discover many ways to display gender specifically in the culture of African Americans and how they differ from the dominate white culture. I am a Haitian American female and I found that through the pictures I captured of my friends, family members and I were of us inexplicably participating in gender and displaying femininity.
In the essay “The No Name Woman” by Maxine Hong Kingston, the story of living in a traditionally male-dominated Chinese society with a very dysfunctional family structure is told. The villages would look upon the men as useful, and women as useless to their society. Kingston, the main character, learns this first hand from how her aunt was treated. Kingston’s aunt, The No Name Woman, is victimized by a male-dominated society by being shunned for an illegitimate child. As a woman, the odds were automatically against you in their society.

The debate between masculinity and femininity is nothing new in this society. Feminist have claimed that sociology in the past was controlled by male sociologists and thus have made distorted truth about the society as its consequence. Some sociologists may have taken too lightly regarding the issue of gender roles which cause uproar from the feminist’s perspectives. However, there are different sociologists such as the functionalist, Marxists that may view and interpret differently in gender roles. No doubt those criticisms are involved in this matter of different theories and perspectives.
