By 1600, Portugal, Great Britain, France, Holland, Sweden, Denmark, and North America were all shipping Africans away from their homeland to work as slaves in European countries (Young, 2011). Although this was not the first known instances of human trafficking, it is noted as the most organized, intentional persecution of a specific population. It wasn’t until 1865 that slavery was made illegal in the United States. However, human trafficking continued to persist in various ways. In 1902, the focus on human trafficking seemed to turn from the African population to white women and girls.
In Mapping the Margins by Kimberle Crenshaw, Crenshaw explains to the readers why women are more subjected to problems of violence. Race and gender have a huge part in this. Women of color, however, are more subjected to these type of things. Including rape, abusive relationships, homelessness, etc. Women of color are part of subgroups which increases their chances of being part of violence.

Human trafficking, or trafficking in persons (TIP) or modern day slavery, is a heinous and widespread crime occurring around the world in nearly every society. Most people often thought slavery was part of the past; however, human slavery is part of our current society and has been an on-going issue around the world. Human trafficking is a type of slavery that involves forced or bonded labour, sexual servitude, child labour, or involuntary servitude all over the world.
