Henry Miller’s, Tropic of Cancer is regarded in many ways controversial. Miller’s eye opening point of view and “in your face” dialogue, bring the reader on a realistic journey through Paris. Henry Miller is infamous for his vulgar linguistics and the way he writes about women. He uses erotic dialogue that makes him different from many other authors. Henry Miller is a progressive writer who shows freedom through his writing. Paris according to Henry Miller is a blank canvas of freedom and inspiration. Miller writes Tropic of Cancer, with no intentions of writing an ordinary book. Like most artists in Paris during the 1930s, people were doing things different. Artists were able to craft new styles the public did not comprehend, and most of the time they were confused, or did not like. Henry Miller is one of those artists. His language was unlike anything ever read before. Miller wrote exactly how he felt. His overt tone while referencing women turned many away from his work. This caused a controversy among his writing. The offensive tone Miller reveals surpasses the boundary of comfort and rather turns the reader off. The frankness of his sexual encounters are beyond ordinary and are often taken too far. One who is emotionally sensitive might not be able to endure reading. His use of disturbing language resulted in the book being banned for twenty-seven years in the united states. An example of his ill-mannered language is when he describes a sexual fantasy about a woman, Tania. He says, “O Tania, where now is that warm cunt of yours, those fat, heavy garters, those soft, bulging thighs? There is a bone in my prick six inches long. I will ream out every wrinkle in your cunt, Tania, big with seed” (5). His foul mouth is disliked by many. Today, this same type of vulgar, erotic “free” language is heard in many styles of music. Especially in the genres of rap and hip hop. People listen to these lyrics at and become desensitized to the overall meaning of what is being conveyed. Opposed to someone who listens to a softer genre of music. This can be a great reason why older generations are more conservative to what they say and how they react, and younger generations are less
