Heracles was a very strong, brave, smart, and determined hero of Greece. He has numerous accomplishments that prove these descriptions in various ways not only through his victories, but as well as his willingness to sacrifice himself for the things that he cares about and loves. The demigod Heracles was the child of supreme god Zeus and a mortal woman named Alceme. He was born in Thebes, Boeotia, Greece. However, Zeus tricked her by disguising himself as her husband, and nine months later she gave birth to twin sons, Iphicles and Heracles. Hera was angry at Zeus for doing this act and she secretly sent two serpents into the twins cradle and Iphicles started to cry, but Heracles strangled them right away. Apollo was known as the god that made mortals aware of their own guilt and purified them of it. Apollo knew that Heracles couldn’t control what he had done and that it was Hera’s fault, but he agreed that he deserved a punishment for his crime. He ordered Heracles to perform the twelve labors for the Mycenaean king Eurystheus. Apollo stated that once all twelve of these labors were complete that he would be purified from his guilt and achieve immortality. These tasks included killing the Nemean Lion, that was terrorizing people of the region, slaying the nine-headed Lernaean Hydra in the underworld, capturing the sacred pet of the goddess Diana, trapping the horrifying man-eating Erymanthean boar, cleaning all the manure out of King Augeas’ gigantic stables in a single day, driving away the Stymphlaian birds in Stymphalos, obtaining The Cretan Bull in the city of Crete, acquiring the Horses of Diomedes, four man-eating horses, stealing the armored belt the belonged to the Amazon queen Hippolyte. As well as, taking the cattle of the three-headed, six-legged monster Geryon, this one being extremely difficult, securing Hera’s wedding gift to Zeus, The Apples of Hesperides, lastly, Heracles had to travel to Hades to kidnap Cerberus, the vicious three-headed dog that guarded its gates.
