I have chosen to write an opinion article for the ‘Herald Sun’ in a reflective/ persuasive style. I have drawn on inspiration from Arthur Miller’s play “Death of a Salesman” to examine the prompt “What people remember shapes their understanding of themselves and their world.” The persona I have taken on is from the perspective of a gen Y, Amy Parks, who is passionate about voicing the opinions and concerns of the youth. This article is written in a casual style, in order to engage a wider audience, as it is targeted at both older generations and gen Ys. The intention of the piece is to make older generations realise that their dreams are not longer applicable to present day society and encourage gen Ys to aspire for their own ambitions. Using Park’s grandparents as an example, I was able to explore why our memories are able to influence our perception. Due to the positive memories that are associated with owning a quarter acre block, they have tried to enforce the same goals upon Parks, in hope that she will experience the same privileges. Parks’ grandparents are parallel characters to Willy Loman. They all want the younger generations to uphold the same dreams, as the achievement of their respective dreams evokes joyous memories. Another character parallel is between Biff and Amy, who both realise that the dreams enforced upon them are unrealistic and unachievable.
