In her poem, " Here Follows Some Verses upon the Burning of Our House, July 10th, 1666," Anne Bradstreet wrote about the burning of her house and the spiritual awakening that the experience gave her. Throughout this poem Bradstreet used personification, in line 8 she wrote, "my heart did cry" and in line 22, " My sorrowing eyes aside did cast," to express the extremity the of emotions she felt from the burning of her house. Her word choice clearly emphasizes her emotion and reliance on her faith to get her through the situation. Bradstreet was a Puritan and through the course of this poem you could tell of her dedication to her religion. She asked God not to leave her without his help in this situation to show how she depended heavily on Him in times of need. In this situation she did not stay from her faith and ask why something like that would happen. Instead, she called upon her God for strength which shows her dedication to her religion.
The word repine was used after she had called upon God for help. In lines 17-18 she wrote, " It was His own, it was not mine, Far be it that I should repine;" The definition of repine is to express discontent. Bradstreet is expressing that everything she owned was in fact not hers but Gods. This is when she begins to see how her attachment to things she valued here on earth was foolish. Now that she realizes this she feels that being unhappy about the situation will not bring 'her' things
