In The Crucible Author Miller, displayed many heroic characters not only for what they did for themselves, but for what they also did for other characters in the story. John Proctor stood out amongst the rest of the character in the story. First reason when all the accusing was at the end John found out that it was all a lie and that Mary Warren was lying too." You're coming to the court with me Mary, You tell it in the court." (Miller 80). Reason being that John didn’t care at the moment what the court would have to say. John mostly had his mind set to try to get his wife and to help the people that were being accused. At that point he didn’t care if he lost the image that he was holding in the town, but he didn’t lose his wife because of something he did. Towards the ending of The Crucible John confessed doing witchcraft, but the court wants to put the written confession on the doorway of the church, but instead, he ripped it up because he already gave up his image and he drew the line at his name. “Because it is my name! Because I cannot have another name in my life because I lie and sign myself to lies! Because I am not worth the dust on the feet of them that hang! How may I live without my name? I have given you may soul; leave me my name! (Miller 143). It shows John Proctor shows heroism because he preferred to die than to give up his name with a lie then with the truth and he had done enough by saying that he did witchcraft. By the end of the Crucible, there were different heroic characters, but John was one of the main ones, by being able to confess his affair with Abigail, talking Mary Warren in telling the truth about everything, and trying to confess to witchcraft which was a lie. There were different ways that the Crucible displayed heroic characters, but out of all the story John Proctor showed a good amount to stand out the
