The famous American president Calvin Coolidge once stated, “Heroism is not only in the man, but in the occasion.” In other words, a person may have heroic qualities but is not necessarily a hero, since the true indication of heroism in an individual is shown by his or her behaviors in different situations. In Odyssey by Homer, the protagonist Odysseus uses his godlike charm and cunning to return to his homeland, despite the fact that the mighty god Poseidon wishes that he never returns. Though Odysseus is developed as a character with heroic qualities, his use of said qualities within certain situations cause him to be portrayed as an antihero, as shown through his lack of control, self-centered actions, and excessive bloodshed.
“Nohbdy that's my name Nohbdy so my mother and my father call me all my friends”. When Odysseus says this it's a plan because Odysseus and his men blind the Cyclops, but when the Cyclops calls to his friends he's going to say nobody hurt me so his friends won't believe him and think he's messing with them. There are many ways Odysseus is a hero but this example shows his intelligence and his Larger than Life quality which makes him the hero he is.
This is shown when he is faced with a problem. He must find a way to escape a Cyclops without him finding out his real name. Therefore, Oddyesus tells the Cyclops his name is, “Nohbody'' (Homer, 380, lines 274-275). This demonstrates how Odysseus uses his cleverness to get out of difficult situations. By telling the Cyclops his name is nobody, he used his cleverness to avoid the Cyclops from knowing his real name.
There are many types of hero, fictional, historical, and modern day. Odysseus was a historical hero, who saved his home of Ithaca. He had so many heroic traits, such as, bravery, courage, caring, loyalty, determination, and so much more. Fictional, modern day and other historical heroes have many of these traits as well. Therefore, the word hero has not changed.
According to Zeus “A true hero isn’t measured by the size of his strength, but by the strength of his HEART.” In the Odyssey, Odysseus tries to get home to his wife and son, but he always seems to get set back. Along the way, Odysseus faces obstacles on his journey home. Odysseus shows he is a hero throughout the story when he saves his crew from the Cyclops, he makes sure his crew doesn’t die from the Siren’s songs, and he had the favor of Zeus against the men he fought for his kingdom, highlighting that he was the hero in Zeus’ eyes. Odysseus having the favor of Zeus is a big deal because he taught good meaning, Odysseus is a hero.
Odysseus: My point of view Odysseus is seen to be a hero in Homer's Odyssey. While many would agree to that statement, I disagree. Odysseus traits of being egotistical, narcissistic and Standoffish hold him back from being a true hero Odysseus is egotistical.
A hero is one who is distinguished for their courage and bravery, and looked upon for their great deeds. In The Odyssey by Homer, Odysseus should be considered a hero! Odysseus has done more good deeds than bad deeds throughout the years of the Odyssey. Odysseus has saved lives more than he has taken them for no good reason. Odysseus has honored people more than dishonored people. Today’s hero code is completely different than in Odysseus’s time.
Heroes are not invulnerable, every Superman has his kryptonite, and all light is born from darkness. These traits of a hero are evident in life, and in the 3000-year-old epic poem, The Odyssey, written by Homer and translated by Robert Fitzgerald. In The Odyssey, Odysseus, Master Mariner and Soldier, is attempting to return home after the Trojan War, to his wife Penelope, son Telemakhos, and his throne as the king of Ithaka. With Poseidon desperately trying to halt his journey, Odysseus faces a multitude of monsters, and distractions on his travels. “The Odyssey-- the return of Odysseus from troy to reclaim his threatened home on Ithaca-- is a superb story, rich in character, adventure and incident… and making the household, rather than the
In The Odyssey Homer makes Odysseus’ journey to his beloved Ithaca excruciating. Odysseus encounters many friends and foes throughout his journey and has to be a leader throughout his experiences. As an example, he encounters Polyphemus and Poseidon, both of whom make his journey mentally and physically painful. Odysseus faces countless scenarios in which he has to save multiple people in those situations. He also encounters the suitors, who are a group of men that try to marry Penelope, when he returns to reclaim his home.
In “The Odyssey”, Odysseus is a strong warrior, physically strong and intelligent. A great epic hero who is the King of Ithaca, and was part of the Trojan War. The story begins when the Trojan War is over and he travels back to his home to get back to his wife Penelope and son Telemachus. As he finds his way home from the Trojan War, Odysseus journey to Ithaca is prolonged through a major character flaw in which he cannot control. Through his journey back home, Odysseus makes poor decisions by falling into temptation, and thus people around him suffer from the consequences.

Heroes. Whether it be a fictional superhero or an everyday savior, everybody has at least one person in their life idolized a hero. In the epic poem by Homer, The Odyssey, one character does anything he can to get his crew and himself home to his family and homeland. Penelope had one hero in her mind for twenty years and she won’t let anyone persuade her a different direction. Penelope has longed for Odysseus’ arrival for twenty years; however, it seems he is not coming home.
Odysseus is an epic hero because of his bravery and confidence during every obstacle throughout his journey In Part 1 whie Odysseus is about to come across cyclops cave, he says “I brought along and victuals in a bag, for in my bones I knew some towering brute would be upon so soon- all outward power, a wild man, ignorant of civility. “ Odysseus is showing his bravery of not being petrified of what he might come across, like the cyclops. Odysseus has no intention of harming them, but he is not sure what their intention is. This example is important because not only does it show confidence in himself, he also shows confidence in his men. In Part 2 Odysseus also shows his confidence in his men in part 2 where Eurylochus says, “Are you flesh and blood, Odysseus, to endure more than a man can?
