Some say that Hester committed an unforgivable sin. However Hester should not have to give up her daughter Pearl. Hester needs Pearl, as she is all she has, and Pearl needs Hester because no one is going to take Pearl in, and every child needs their mother in their life.
Hester did commit a horrible sin in the eyes of the Puritans. The Puritans also believe that because Hester committed the sin, that she is punished with Pearl. (Chapter 6, page 63) “..as a direct consequence of the sin which man thus punished, had given her a lovely child, whose place was that same dishonored bosom, to connect her to her parent forever…”. Pearl is connected to Hester forever and will live with the same sin as Hester. By that, even though Pearl did nothing wrong

Pearl also needs her mother in her life, not only because no one is going to take her in, but because she needs motherly influence. Every child needs their mother in their life, for guidance, love and support. Without having Hester in Pearl’s life, she could turn into a bad kid. Or even make the same mistake that Hester made. Pearl could also turn into more of an aggressive kid, she already starts to show it when the town kids started to surround her, and she threw rocks at them. Hester sensed the sign as well. Hawthorn stated in paragraph 6 of page 75 “ Pearl would frown, and clench her little fists and harden her small features into a stern,un-synthesizing look of discontent.” Pearl would also need her mother to show her new lessons in life, such as; sewing, cleaning, and just how to live life as a puritan.
Hester needs Pearl, as she is all Hester has, and Pearl needs Hester because no one is going to take her in, and every child needs their mother. So Hester should keep Pearl, not matter what the townspeople think. The townspeople can discriminate Hester, but they shouldn't take Pearl away from Hester. Hester has committed a horrendous sin in their eyes, and that does not mean that she does not deserve to have Pearl. Pearl will remind Hester of her sin every day of Hester's
