All your life you are told you need to go to college to be successful. In reality college is a chance to be successful but, doesn’t mean that you will be. In his article “Americas Most Overrated Product” Marty Nemko talks about college student statistics stating, "College is a wise choice for far fewer people than are currently encouraged to consider it” (527). Nemko states, “Among high school students who graduated in the bottom forty percent of their classed, and whose first institutions were four-year colleges, two thirds had not earned diplomas eight years later” (523). People who end up getting college diplomas hardly ever work in the career that they have a degree in, let alone can get jobs that require a degree.

The general argument made by author Charles Murray in his article, “Are too many people go to college,” is that the college is not necessary for everyone. More specifically, the Murray argues that students who went to school should have learned the core knowledge they will learn in the college. He writes, “ K-8 are the right years to teach the core knowledge, and the effort should get off to a running start in elementary school” (236). In this passage, Murray is suggesting that start teaching the core knowledge in elementary school until high school is better than to spend money and more time to the college. The Value of a College Degree Having a college degree is arguably one of the most important things you can achieve in your lifetime. In today’s society, it is getting much more difficult to survive without one. Most places of business that offer substantial wages and benefits require some sort of college degree. A good education is beneficial from many different viewpoints; in truth, it is a possibility that one's adult life could be much harder than people care to think. I have personally witnessed that a high school diploma has little value in a job market. After receiving my high school diploma I had difficulties finding a job; employers were looking for trainings, certificates, and experiences. It took me two months to find a job that did not require cleaning bathrooms or flipping burgers in a swelter of a fast-food kitchen. I was lucky to find an employer who was willing to provide training and did not require prior experience. I received required training on the job and worked up to a promotion.
As long as I can remember, I knew that college was going to be part of my future. That is because I always knew what my family expected out of me. College is not only important to me for the reason of making my parents proud, but for making sure that I create more out of myself, as well. With a higher education, I will have more job opportunities available, potentially be able to earn higher income, and obtain more useful life skills than somebody who does not have a college education. The answer is yes and no. If your dream is to become a freelance photographer, a police officer or any other job that can be achieved with only a high school diploma, you probably don’t need college. If you’re aiming for becoming a doctor, a lawyer or anything else of the sort, college is a must. It’s simple, and deciding that you don’t want to go to college isn’t a bad thing. Without college education, it is highly likely that employers will not hire people with only a high school diploma. Going straight to college out of high school is very controversial, because of the benefits and the disadvantages. This has been a big debate among students who are getting out of high school and trying to make an important decision about what they want to do in life. Two high school graduates (Mike and Sue) are talking about what they are job going to do when they get out of high school. Mike says that he is going to college to get a good for himself after college. Sue disagrees and says that she is going straight into the workforce to make money right away.
Finally, it can be an obvious inference that someone that chose to continue their education post high school will be more intellectual and worldly than someone that ended their education after 12th grade. College gives you an opportunity to widen your experiences in your desired field. When I look at the list of pros and cons that comes with going to college, it is easy for me to see that the pros definitely outweigh the cons. The benefits that come with a college degree will carry you further in life than you would go if you chose to opt out of a post-secondary
A college education is very important for me to obtain the career I want. College will provide me the knowledge and practice I need to be successful. Going to college will help me get accustomed to the pressure of the real world and will give me the opportunity to become independent. Graduating college is my number one goal in life. It would be an awarding payoff for all the hard work and dedication to my studies throughout high school.
