“This could be the start of something new.” Does this quote sound familiar? High School Musical is a teen/romantic comedy musical television movie and it’s the first movie of the High School Musical trilogy. High School Musical is about a popular high school basketball star named Troy Bolton and a shy, academically gifted girl named Gabriella Montez. The two teenagers meet at a karaoke contest on New Year’s Eve and instantly click over their secret passion for singing. When Troy returns to East High after winter break, he runs into Gabriella and he discovers that she’s a new student at East High. Social stratification has to do with inequality and the way inequality categorizes people and social groups in society. High School Musical demonstrates social status in the movie. Social status is the position or ranking of an individual or group within society. In High School Musical, everyone fits into a specific clique. They have the jocks, the musical theatre kids, the brainiacs, and skaters at East High. Each social clique at East High has acceptable behaviors, but it is not acceptable to intermingle with people that are outside of your social clique. It’s normal for the students at East High to not branch out and discover passions outside of your usual social circle. The social order at East High has caused the students to become ashamed of some of their secret interests and passions. An example of social status and social stratification on a different level in this movie is through the faculty. Troy and his best friend Chad got detention for and detention is monitored by the drama teacher, Mrs. Darbus. Coach Bolton, Troy’s father and East High’s basketball coach, found out and thought that he would be able to get Troy and Chad out of detention since the sports department is a top priority at East High. Mrs. Darbus told Coach Bolton that Troy and Chad shouldn’t be exempted from school policy because they are basketball stars at the high
