I think information literacy was despite the fact they did not have the technology like we have now days, it was something people would still have to learn to get accurate information. Newspapers, phone books, radio, library with tons of books and encyclopedias were also part of that era that started the necessity for inventors to create what we have today. In the short story “The Trouble with Self-Esteem,” Lauren Slater argues if having either low or high self-esteem is vital to a person’s well-being. An individual who has low self-esteem is more prone to committing crimes and being worse off in life. She states that “the less confidence you have, the worse you do; the more confidence you have, the better you do; and so the luminous loop goes around” (Slater 744). She then switches her argument to how having a high self-esteem can be an equal hazard. She provides results from three studies done in the United States that all imply people with high self-esteem can be a greater risk to individuals in their surroundings.

During his speech addressed to the UN general Assembly given on September 25,1961, John F. Kennedy stated, “Conformity is the Jailer of freedom and the enemy of growth.” In other words, if we all accept the circumstances and go with the flow like dead fish, how can we know what we are capable of accomplishing-how much we can grow, especially as a nation? Conformity can be defined as the compliance with standards, rules, or laws or the moment you willingly chose to fit in when you’re meant to stand out. In the 1950s, a flood of social conformity washed over the country and had people leading similar and stereotypical lives. Many, at the time, strived for the comfort and simplicity depicted in TV shows such as “Father Knows Best” and “Leave it

That could be described as the peaceful, prosperous, and smooth sailing of the stereotypical characteristic of all people living in this time period. But, as stereotypes may be looked upon as facts, this was not the case at all. Though, the 1950’s may seem like a peaceful era, it was much more complex than that, the 1950s did not always match up with this popular image.

A wise man named Samuel Butler once said ,``The truest characters of ignorance are vanity and pride and arrogance. Does having too much pride trap or serve us? Some believe that having a healthy self-worth means taking pride in the achievements we make. But if value is linked to our self-image or accomplishments then it is built on a tenuous foundation. Pride is a characteristic proven to prevent us from acknowledging our vulnerabilities as a human.
