Hilary Stout's Antisocial Networking
The essay “Your Social Life: Are You a Fox or a Hedgehog?” is written by Pamela Haag and can be found on pages 398-400. Haag discusses in her essay the two types of social groups: foxes, and hedgehogs. The generations before social media would be, mostly, classified as hedgehogs and the generations after social media would be, mostly, classified as foxes. Foxes have broad friend bases but shallow relationships. On the other hand, hedgehogs have narrow friend bases and deep relationships with more meaning.
52% of teens have said that social media has helped their relationship with friends. A lot of kids are more themselves on the internet than in real life. They express themselves more differently on the internet than they would in the outside world. Teens are usually always acting differently than what they normally would when they are on the internet. We are able to express ourselves better over the internet, than in real life, because we may be under less peer pressure.
My brother is turning down opportunity. I can literally walk into his room at any time to find him doing homework, watching anime, on his phone talking to friends, on his ipad playing games, and all while blasting random music. For the past four weeks, this class has looked into the effects of social media, both good and bad. And social media is everywhere; in nearly every family you can find people who use social media 24/7. In the adaption of “Antisocial Networking” written by Hilary Stout, she expresses her views on the effects of electronics on the younger generation.

I feel that social media is helping benefit our society especially for children who lack social skills because it is helping them for in the future when they will have to interact with people in their everyday lives. Because through Snapchat they are actually communicating with photos or videos which is good interpretation of what it is like in life. Children love the idea of social media because they are constantly able to talk to their friends and see what their friends are doing. Some parents are against the ideas of social media and some parents are totally for social media. I think both have their positives and negatives.
“A quarter of teenagers say they have been bullied either by text or in the internet. Sexting is another high-risk behavior of concern, with 24% of teenagers aged 14-17 have participated in some sort of nude sexing. ”(2) Technology can also affect the way children begin to feel, creating different moods from no technology
The World Wide Web has only been around since the early 90s, but the use of the internet for social purposes is clearly seen in today’s society. It has allowed for quicker communication and instant satisfaction for users. As its popularity has gone up, so has the amount of social media apps available. Users have plenty of options to connect with one another, including Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, Twitter, and plenty others, and these apps have allowed for people to find different outlets for their stress, beliefs, and other aspects of their lives. Teenagers have been a main user of this type of technology because they were born into a world that relies heavily on phones, computers, and televisions; however, many claim that it is detrimental
Instead of wanting to open a new social media account children should do their homework, spend time with family, or go do outdoor activities with friends. If children have social media accounts they will “spend hours browsing and surfing the web”, they will only want to be using it all the time and they will leave all the priorities last (Keim). Now in this generation “our social interaction face to face is decreasing” because we now have advanced accounts that keeps us away from real life activities, and children are influenced by it (Smarty). Children’s time will be wasted in social media because it is not doing any good to them. That time that was wasted on social media could have been used for something way more productive out of the internet.
While Teenagers feel that social media is more important than the real world its alot of negative effects of social media. One is that it can take over brain cells and effect mental and physical health. Being On social media every day, every hour, and every minute can really cause damage to your brain cells. Our brain grows as when learn new things and when we learn the new things it changes after we done experienced it. It Changes the way we think and feel.
Some people say that social media is dangerous for kids because it changes their behaviors and more importantly it affects their learning for school. It is dangerous because, they never know who they are chatting with online. Social media changes children 's behaviors because they do unhealthy things that are intended for people over 18 years of age. It also affects their education in a bad way by using abbreviations or slang that threatens their skills in writing. However, others say that social media is beneficial for kids because researchers see them expressing themselves on it.
Technology has clearly given our world numerous advantages and positive resources. One of the most controversial aspects to technology, however, holds many negative opinions. These debated views are geared towards smartphones because of their accessibility. From a young age children are introduced to these devices, and when they finally get one of their own they rarely put them down. One of the reasons that youth find smartphones so difficult to turn away from is social media.
Living in the modern era makes social media become part of our life. Basically, social media are used for communication and social interaction. Based on the Merriam-Webster, social media are forms of electronic communication (as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (as videos). There are lots of social media that people use nowadays such as Instagram, Twitter, Facebook, Snapchat, Path, and others. Most of people probably have two or more social media’s accounts.

Social networking sites exhibits individual profile and facilitates with various other activities such as sharing information with each other. Social networking sites grab million of people in the globe who are united these websites into their daily life style. Social networking sites will become famous all over the world.
In the fast developing contemporary world, it seems to be that people cannot spend a day without social media, despite the fact of its numerous negative effects. The vulnerable teenagers should limit the use of social media by spending less time on the Internet as it can cause a number of negative consequences: it can lead to health as well as social problems. Proponents, however, argue that social media changed lives to the better as it made communication easier and faster and there are no negative effects from social media. They might also say it is impossible to withdraw from the Internet at all. This may be true and their argument is valid, nevertheless, all the negative impacts on one’s physical as well as mental health and social life outweigh the mentioned advantages.
