Freedom within Hills like White Elephants and Story of an Hour Freedom: the power or right to act, speak, or think as one wants without hindrance or restraint. Many people strive for it, but it is nerveless undefined. Everyone wants to be free, yet we do not really know what it means to be free. Within the story “Hills like White elephants” and “Story of an Hour” freedom is a big influence in the main characters. Both characters make efforts to achieve a different kind of freedom, and it is either an awful experience or a joyful experience. Jig says “once they take it away, you never get it back.” The child is a symbol of her identity and free will. The cost of freedom differs in the two stories in jigs story, it does not involve death but instead life. It is a symbol of her taking control of her life and relationship. In the story of an hour, freedom arises from the death of Louise husband. Not to mention a freedom that was so compelling that when it was ripped from her it killed her. In the middle of what seemed to be a crisis she finds freedom. For Louise all that existed was the moment when she had finally escaped the control of her husband and was able to live free and do as she pleased. Instead of seeing death with her husband no matter how good he was to her, she saw it as a rebirth in herself. Her husband’s death freed her and she saw the best moments of life that were to soon come. In a brief period of time where there should have been grief there was instead joyfulness and relief. She realized that she would have the rest of her life to live for herself and not her husband. There is no one to command her anymore and this is why
