Did you know that Hinduism is the oldest religion and Buddhism is the third oldest? If you didn’t know already, you should know that there are 5 major religions. After reading chapters 16 The Story of Buddhism and chapter 15 Learning Hinduism Beliefs, it can be seen that there are many differences between Buddhism and Hinduism. Both Hinduism and Buddhism started off as a polytheistic religion, however as time went on, Buddhism began to form as a nontheistic religion. Hinduism believes in multiple gods, including the supreme god Brahman. He creates, recreates, and destroys the universe, Buddhism also has a central figure to guide followers understanding of the world. However, their central figure is human and not divine. Through his own experience, he thought his followers how to live. Siddhartha Gautama taught his followers to live by the Eightfold path; whereas Hindus are taught to follow their dharma based on their Caste. Both religions have moral codes and laws to follow. Buddhism and Hinduism are more different than similar because of their central beliefs. There was no official founder of Hinduism. Siddhartha Gautama (The Buddha) founded Buddhism. In Learning Hinduism Beliefs, it states “Today, many historians agree that Hinduism began with India’s first settlers. But the earliest holy writing of Hinduism came after the Aryans arrived. These writings probably reflect a blend of Aryans beliefs with those of people the conquered. These early Hindu writing are known as the Vedas.” There is no evidence that Buddhists had one specific holy text. This is because Buddhists have many sacred texts. Instead of believing the holy text tells you the way to live, Buddhist believe in the Eightfold Path. Many would believe that Hinduism and Buddhism have similarities.
